Busan places booked, Fan Zhendong and Zhu Yuling win in Shenzhen

Fan Zhendong and Zhu Yuling emerged the respective men’s singles and women’s winners at the Marvellous 12 staged in Shenzhen from Tuesday 1st to Saturday 4th January.

Thus for each, a place their country’s colours at the forthcoming World Team Championships to be staged in March in Busan was reserved.

Maintaining the form displayed towards the end of last year, when most notably he had won on home soil at the Chengdu Airlines 2019 Men’s World Cup and at the Agricultural Bank of China ITTF World Tour Grand Finals, Fan Zhendong was once again in most imposing form.

He beat Zhang Yudong (11-7, 13-11, 11-9, 11-5) and Lin Gaoyuan (9-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-6, 9-11, 11-2) to book his place in the final trio where, after overcoming Zhou Qihao (11-9, 11-9, 11-8, 3-11, 11-8), he beat Xu Xin (11-9, 9-11, 5-11, 18-16, 11-7, 11-5) to secure the title.

Notably, contrary to expectations, Zhou Qihao finished proceedings in second place. In his opening encounter he beat Zhao Zihao (8-11, 11-8, 11-9, 15-13, 11-6), prior to causing major upsets. In the second phase he accounted for Ma Long (11-7, 7-11, 7-11, 11-8, 11-9, 2-11, 11-6), before in the final group, overcoming Xu Xin (11-8, 11-9, 6-11, 11-6, 11-9).

A continuation of good form from Fan Zhendong, for Zhu Yuling, it was a return to form; no major titles to her name since July 2018, when she had won the women’s singles event at the ITTF World Tour Shinan Korea Open in Daejeon, it was a back to winning ways.

In the opening round she beat Qian Tianyi (11-4, 11-7, 11-9, 11-8), prior to overcoming Ding Ning (11-6, 11-9, 11-1, 8-11, 7-11, 9-11, 11-7) to book her place in the final three alongside Chen Meng and Sun Yingsha.

Hard fought contests, as had been the scenario throughout the tournament, Zhu Yuling competed in the opening matches, as opposed to Fan Zhendong who played in the second and third. She beat Chen Meng (11-9, 11-9, 11-7, 4-11, 8-11, 11-9), before overcoming Sun Yingsha (9-11, 11-8, 6-11, 11-7, 11-9, 11-5) to bring matters to a conclusion.

Defeats for Xu Xin and Sun Yingsha but there was success, on the opening day of action, they had secured the mixed doubles title.

They beat Liang Jingkun and Chen Meng (6-11, 11-6, 11-7, 10-12, 11-6, 11-4) to reserve their place in the final three where the good form continued. Impressively, they accounted for Ma Long and Ding Ning (11-9, 11-8, 11-8), followed by success in opposition to Fan Zhendong and Gu Yuting (11-8, 11-8, 6-11, 11-9).

Earlier, in the opening contest in the title deciding group, Fan Zhendong and Gu Yuting had beaten Ma Long and Ding Ning (14-12, 11-7, 5-11, 11-5).
