2005 Asian Championships: Clean sweep for Wang Liqin
Staged in Jeju, Korea Republic from Saturday 27th August to Friday 2nd September, the name to stand out above all others was Wang Liqin, the player who earlier in the year had regained his men’s singles crown at the Volkswagen 48th World Championships in Shanghai.
Arguably at the peak of his career, 27 years old at the time, he completed the clean sweep.
He joined forces with Chen Qi and Wang Hao to win the men’s team title, partnered Chen Qi to men’s doubles gold and Guo Yue to the mixed doubles top prize before sealing the men’s singles title.
In the men’s team event, China recorded a three-nil win against Korea Republic to reserve the top step of the podium; the Athens 2004 men’s singles final when Wang Hao had lost to Ryu Seungmin vivid in the memory. One wondered if there was to be a repeat; in the opening match when facing Ryu Seungmin, Wang Hao lost the first two games, before recovering to win three in a row.
Wang Liqin duly accounted for Oh Sangeun, to be followed by Chen Qi against Lee Jungwoo to conclude matters.
Later in the men’s doubles, partnering Chen Qi, it was no different, the pair ending the aspirations of Hong Kong. In the quarters they accounted for Cheung Yuk and Leung Chu Yan in three straight games before in a much closer final, decided in seven games, they overcame Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching. Sandwiched in between, in the penultimate round, they ousted Lee Jungwoo and Oh Sangeun. In the counterpart penultimate round Ko Lai Chak and Li Ching had also caused Korea Republic heartaches,
Likewise, in liaison with Guo Yue, the player with whom he won gold in the mixed doubles in Shanghai, the pair beat Chiang Peng-Lung and Lu Yun-Feng in the quarters followed by a semi-final success against the latter's Chinese Taipei colleagues, Chiang Hung-Chieh and Lee I-Chen to reserve a place in the final where they accounted for Ko Lai Chak and Zhang Rui.
In the later rounds The Hong Kong duo had recorded notable wins; at the quarter-final stage they beat Lee Jinkwon and Moon Hyunjung followed by success against two players who were to become Olympic
Games gold medallists; no less than Ma Long and Li Xiaoxia!
Success alongside colleagues; it was same alone. In the men's singles Wang Liqin beat Chuang Chih-Yuan in the quarters, Hao Shuai in the semis and Li Ching in the final. Li Ching was undoubtedly the surprise finalist defeating Jun Mizutani in the fourth round, Ryu Seungmin in the quarters and Choi Hyunjin in the semis.
Furthermore, the appearance of Choi Hyunjin in the penultimate round was also unexpected. He upset the seeding by ending the hopes of Chen Qi in round three, Chiang Peng-Lung in round four and Leung Chu
Yan in the quarters. Meanwhile, Jun Mizutani halted the progress of Wang Hao in the third round.
