East Asia Qualification to Asian Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championship concludes with a bang
22nd May 2019
The East Asia Qualification at Pyongyang was attended by teams from Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong and Korea Republic as well as the host DPR Korea. To mark its importance, the event was attended by Mr. Tony Yue, Hon. Secretary General of Asian table Tennis Union and Mr. Lee You Sung, East Asian Regional Vice President of Asian Table Tennis Union.
The Girls’ team event was won comfortably by the team from PRK that beat TPE by 3 matches to 1. Both teams qualify for the main event to be held in Mongolia in September 2019.
The Boys’ team event turned out to be dramatic. In the first round, boys from HKG and TPE won hard fought matches against KOR and PRK respectively. In the second round, TPE won easily against HKG and KOR recovered from its loss in the morning to beat PRK by 3 matches to 1. The final round on Day 2 was nail biting. As PRK beat HKG comfortably by 3 matches to 0, the scene was set for the very exciting match on the next table. TPE had qualified already due to two wins in Round 1 and 2. KOR had to win to qualify as a loss would mean that PRK would qualify by Game Ratio. KOR won the first 2 matches, but lost the next 2 to make the overall score at 2 matches each. In the fifth and final match, PARK Gyu Hyeon from KOR won the first two games, but pressure got to him and lost the next 2 games. The match then went to 9-9 in the fifth and final game. LI Hsin-Yu from TPE was the first to get a match point. Alas, he did not manage to convert, but lost 3 points in a row, thereby losing the final game and match.
As a result, KOR and TPE both qualify for the main event in Mongolia with PRK narrowly missing the opportunity.
