Sun Wen once again shines
Totally contrary to expectations a semi-finalist the previous month in Japan, once again on Tuesday 2nd July, China’s Sun Wen was the player to attract the attention.
In his opening preliminary round contest in the men’s singles event at the Seamaster 2019 ITTF World Tour Shinan Korea Open, he beat Sweden’s Anton Källberg, the recent winner at the ITTF Challenge Series tournament in Asia. Impressively, Sun Wen emerged successful in five games (11-8, 6-11, 11-5, 12-10, 11-7).
Defeat for Anton Källberg, there was also defeat for colleague, Truls Möregard; he also suffered at Chinese hands, he was beaten by Xu Yingbin (11-8, 11-9, 11-7, 11-3).
Success for Sun Wen and Xu Yingbin, it was the same from compatriot Xiang Peng, the reigning Asian junior boys’ singles champion and for Xu Fei, the 2017 world junior champion. In the opening preliminary round of the men’s singles event Xiang Peng beat Hungary’s Bence Majoros (11-2, 8-11, 11-6, 11-6, 11-6); Xu Fei accounted for Singapore’s Pang Yew En Koen (11-8, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4).
Meanwhile, winners on the ITTF World Tour, the host country’s Kim Donghyun and China’s Zheng Peifeng both started in style. Kim Donghyun, who won in 2015 in Bulgaria, beat Hong Kong’s Kwan Man Ho (2-11, 11-9, 11-8, 11-8, 11-4); Zheng Peifeng, successful last year in the Czech Republic, overcame Korea Republic’s Park Gyuhyeon (11-7, 11-4, 11-9, 4-11, 11-5).
Notable performances from China in the opening preliminary round of the men’s singles event; it was similar at the same stage of the women’s doubles competition.
Respective junior girls’ singles gold and silver medallists at the 2018 World Junior Championships; China’s Qian Tianyi and Shi Xunyao, made impressive starts. Both beat host nation adversaries; Qian Tianyi overcame Lee Yeonhui (11-8, 11-6, 11-8, 11-7), Shi Xunyao accounted for Lee Eunhye (15-13, 8-11, 15-13, 11-5, 11-5).
Previously successful on the ITTF World Tour, there were successful starts for Germany’s Shan Xiaona, Japan’s Sakura Mori and the host nation’s Lee Dasom. Shan Xiaona beat Korea Republic’s Kim Yejin (11-2, 11-4, 11-5, 11-6), Sakura Mori overcame Kim Nayeong, also from the host nation (11-3, 11-2, 5-11, 11-5, 11-5). Lee Dasom ended the hopes of India’s Madhurika Patkar (11-8, 11-6, 11-3, 11-3).
Impressive performances, in the men’s doubles preliminary round Singaporean teenagers Josh Chua Shao Han and Pang Yew En Koen attracted the attention; they recovered from a two games to nil deficit to beat India’s Amalraj Anthony and Sathiyan Gnanasekaran (8-11, 5-11, 11-9, 11-5, 12-10).
Noteworthy from Josh Chua Shao Han and Pang Yew En Koen in the men’s doubles event, it was the same in the women’s doubles opening preliminary round from Hong Kong’s MaK Tze Wing and Zhu Chengzhu; they recorded a four games win against India’s Archana Girish Kamath and Manika Batra (11-7, 7-11, 13-11, 15-13).
Play in the qualification tournament concludes on Wednesday 3rd July.
