World champions escape, reach final
Winners in Budapest earlier this year at the Liebherr 2019 World Championships China Xu Xin and Liu Shiwen, the top seeds, secured their place in the final of the mixed doubles event at the 2019 Asian Championships in Yogyakarta on the evening of Thursday 19th September.
Gold or silver is assured but they came perilously close to the colour being bronze.
A full distance five games win was the outcome but having lost the opening two games against Lee Sangsu and Jeon Jihee, the no.4 seeds; they trailed 1-7 in the third.
It appeared a notable Korean victory was on the horizon, it was not to accrue, at 8-10, the Chinese duo saved two match points, they then won the next two and the tide had turned; a dramatic five games victory was secured (4-11, 7-11, 12-10, 11-6, 11-6)
In the final, colleagues, Wang Chuqin and Sun Yingsha, the no.2 seeds, await. They beat Hong Kong’s Wong Chun Ting and Doo Hoi Kem, the no.3 seeds (11-7, 11-6, 11-13, 13-11).
“We had match points in third game, but did not grasp the chance. Now we are already fully getting used to the competing environment and rhythm. Our opponents in the final will be much stronger. We need make 100 per cent preparation.” Sun Yingsha
The final will be played on Saturday 21stSeptember.
